When you need a quick reminder, there is nothing like the convenience of screen capture videos demonstrating exactly what you need to get done! Please also read my comments below for more about this video.
This sample is created using Camtasia, a screen capture elearning tool and is an example of a demonstration only training module made for teaching a specific on-the-job function.
Demonstration Only training modules allow a viewer to watch and learn yet there is no interactivity besides the senses affected by music, voice, and graphics. Elearning training modules that are interactive can allow users to connect to other websites, navigate choices and further, can assess a user’s proficiency. That’s great, right?
Well, the benefit of screen capture demonstrations vs. interactive tutorials are in the user’s control to see and pace what they are learning. Interactive elearning is definitely more engaging with or without a music or a voice over yet a user is then required to follow prompts in order to complete the session. Choosing which method is most suitable depends on the agreed upon training objectives long before you even start designing the modules. Is the goal to be informed on need-to-know information or is it to be able to do the right thing based on need-to-know information? When first discussing a training program with client managers, my favorite question is still, “So what is the rationale behind investing in this training?”
Since I am quite lively in person, one might wonder why I did not use voice over for this module (or not!). This example is created for adding dynamics to a live presentation. As a trainer and former wedding singer, I would rather be interacting with my audience as even a live voice over here and there than just press play and walk away!
Let’s keep training thoughtful of deliverables, simple for retention and easy for review! This is a 3 minute video. Thanks for checking it out!
